The month of June is filled with a wide variety of performances from the Grammy Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, beginning with Philip Glass' Violin Concerto No. 2, "The American Four Seasons," composed for and played by Robert McDuffie on June 2 and 4, at Atlanta Symphony Hall.
On June 3 the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to the late David Bowie with a musical odyssey that explores the incredible range of his music. Arranged for orchestra by Windborne Music, the symphonic homage includes music from hits including Space Oddity, Changes, Under Pressure, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, Fame, China Girl and more.
Pianist André Watts will join the Orchestra for the 2015-16 Delta Classical season finale, which will feature an all-Brahms program led by Music Director Robert Spano. The June 9, 11 and 12 performances include Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 and Symphony No. 2.
ASO Presents will bring a number of performances to Symphony Hall in June. The iconic performer Cyndi Lauper and special guest The Peach Kings will make a stop in Atlanta Symphony Hall on June 5 as a part of her DETOUR TOUR. Renowned jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and leading violinist Joshua Bell, together with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will perform a night of spectacular music on June 10. Lastly, the South Africa born, Colorado native Gregory Alan Isakov will join the Orchestra on June 17 for a performance featuring his original music.
Also from ASO Presents, a Jerry Garcia symphonic celebration featuring Warren Haynes and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Chastain Park Amphitheatre on June 24. This ground-breaking orchestral program curated by the Garcia family features Jerry Garcia's original compositions as well as classic interpretations of timeless standards that were hallmarks of Garcia and the Grateful Dead.
On June 16, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will return to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park for an evening of Great American Music featuring a salute to the American West with John Williams' The Cowboys Overture and Aaron Copland's Three Dance Episodes from Rodeo. Led by Assistant Conductor Joseph Young, this concert will also feature the final movement from Jennifer Higdon's Violin Concerto, performed by Assistant/Acting Associate Concertmaster Justin Bruns.
To close out the month, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform Windborne's The Music of the Eagles at Chastain Park Amphitheatre on June 25. Amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by singers Terry Brock, Glenn DeLaune and John Hines, Martin Herman conducts the ensemble as they capture The Eagles' amazing vocal harmonies surrounded by the Orchestra in a concert rich with melodies and lush harmonies.
