Atlanta Lyric Theatre presents this sparkling, larger than life production October 19-November 4, 2018. After a fabulous run in Gwinnett county, the Lyric is pleased to bring this exciting collaboration with Aurora Theatre to its audiences. Based on the 1992 motion picture, NEWSIES features a score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES, performs at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (548 South Marietta Pkwy., Marietta). For tickets, reservations and group pricing visit www.AtlantaLyric.com or call 404-377-9948.
Timely and fresh, the fictionalized adaptation of the historic newsboy's strike of 1899 is a David-versus-Goliath struggle as a group of passionate young men (and one incredibly intelligent young woman) learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment. With high-energy, acrobatic dance numbers, and a gorgeous score, the stage version introduces eight brand-new songs while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including "Carrying the Banner," "Seize the Day," "King of New York" and "Santa Fe."
NEWSIES stars Greg Kamp as Jack Kelly, the leader of our ragtag group of young activists. Last seen in Atlanta on Aurora stage as MARK in A Chorus Line. KAMP also appeared in the ALLIANCE THEATRE's production of Barry Manilow's Hamony, following its development to the Ahmanson Theatre, and the National Tour of Catch Me If You Can. KAMP has enjoyed performing on regional stages all over the country as well as in film and television.
Adrianna Trachell, who glows as young upstart reporter KATHERINE PLUMBER was last seen at the Lyric as part of the Suzi Nominated ensemble of World Goes 'Round and as MARY MAGDALENE in Jesus Christ Superstar. TRACHELL also appeared in Broadway's Bring It On: the Musical as well as joining the 1st National Tour. An adept singer/songwriter TRACHELL released her first EP this past year and will be releasing her first album near Fall of 2018.
The cast also features Mahalia Jackson (Once On This Island, Hairspray, The Harvey Milk Show) Stephan Jones (The Walking Dead,) and a powerhouse ensemble of dancers.
Director JUSTIN ANDERSON is well known to the Atlanta community, with 10 Suzi nominations for directing and 2 wins for Aurora Theatre's productions of The Bridges of Madison County and Les Miserables. ANDERSON's unique, collaborative and contemporary vision make this production of NEWSIES unlike the rest. He is joined by Music Director ANN-CAROL PENCE and choreographer Ricardo Aponte.
