After a ten year absence, Atlanta cabaret and theatre icon Robert Ray returns to the stage (and straps on some high heels) in Out Front Theatre Company's production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Muiscal! Ray will appear in the role of Bernadette Bassenger and will belt out classic tunes like "MacArthur Park," "We Belong," "True Colors," "I Will Survive" and many more!
Robert Ray made his Broadway debut in the 1980 revival of Oklahoma! at the Palace Theatre. That same year he was nominated for four NYC Cabaret Awards, winning two. In addition to Broadway he has worked Off-Broadway, National Tours and performed internationally for Seaborn Cruise Lines as a Pianist and Headliner. Closer to home he has performed at The Alliance Theater, Atlanta Lyric, Theater in the Square, Canton Playhouse, Southside Theatre, Strand Theater and Theater of the Stars. Across the nation he has appeared at The Kennedy Center, Wolftrap, St. Louis Muny Opera, The Arie Crown in Chicago, The Curran in San Francisco and the Pantages in L.A. Outside of musical theater Robert has maintained a parallel career as a Cabaret Artist headlining at clubs in New York as well as Libby's Cabaret, Gene & Gabe's Upstairs, Showcase Cabaret and The Manhattan Yellow Pages and for the past 3 years he has headlined the Piano Bar at Campagnolo restaurant (all in Atlanta.)
Based on the popular 1994 film of the same name, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical follows Mitzi Del Bra, (aka Anthony "Tick" Belrose), Felicia Jollygoodfellow (aka Adam Whitely) and Bernadette Bassenger on a run-down old bus (they call it Priscilla) as they set out on a road trip across the Australian Outback. Tick, is invited by his ex-wife to perform his drag show at her far-away resort. However, he is hesitant to tell his friends, Bernadette (a former performing icon who's best days are behind her) and Adam (a rambunctious young troublemaker), his own personal reasons for taking the trip. During their journey, the trio encounters an array of Australian citizens, some of who aren't receptive to their lifestyle, while strengthening their own friendship.
With a dazzling array of outrageous dance floor favorites including "It's Raining Men," "I Will Survive," "Hot Stuff," "Go West," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and "I Love The Nightlife" this wildly fresh and funny musical is a journey to the heart of fabulous!
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical runs October 20, 2016 through November 6, 2016.
