Atlanta's nationally acclaimed ALLIANCE THEATRE is pleased to present The Jungle Book, based on the beloved book by Rudyard Kipling, as part of its Alliance Family Series. Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, directs this moving, family-friendly, one-act play with music. During the Alliance's season-long renovation, The Jungle Book will be staged at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center, February 10 - March 4, 2018.
The Jungle Book is the story of Mowgli, a boy abandoned to the jungle, who must learn to find his place within the longstanding community of animals. Taught by Baloo the bear, Bagheera the black panther, and Akela the old wolf, Mowgli is enlightened with the sacred master words of the hunting people: "We be of one blood, you and I." However, Shere Khan the tiger does not believe that Mowgli is part of the jungle. Mowgli must rally his animal friends to stand up to the fierce Khan and restore peace.
"This is a story about finding family where we least expect it," said Director Rosemary Newcott. "It's a classic tale about survival, adaptability, and about embracing differences and recognizing that we can learn from a diverse number of sources and in multiple ways."
The cast for The Jungle Book is led by 6th grader Caleb Baumann (Alliance: Shakespeare in Love) as Mowgli. The cast also includes Ashely Anderson as Tabaqui/Monkey; Markelle Gay as Baloo/Monkey King; Jonathan Horne as Shere Khan/Human/Rann; J.L. Reed as Bagheera/Father Wolf/Monkey; and Adrianna Trachell as Raksha/Akela/Kaa/Monkey.
The set and costumes for The Jungle Book are inspired by the natural environment of the Indian jungles. The creative team for The Jungle Book includes Kat Conley, Set Designer; Sydney Roberts, Costume Designer; Steven Love, Lighting Designer; Clay Benning, Sound Designer; and Jen MacQueen, Movement Consultant. The production will include original music by Composer and Musical Director S. Renee Clark.
