Come to the first show of the new year at the Academy Theatre! I and You by Lauren Gunderson was heralded a "breakout play" by the New York Times. Impact Theatre Atlanta's Artistic Director and founder Brenda Porter is back to direct this very poignant piece.
"Gunderson created something that encourages us to honor our similarities with others and our differences. We desperately need that in today's world." Says Porter, who has directed a myriad of cutting edge work such as Orlandersmith's Yellowman and Split Second by Dennis McIntyre. Porter continues, "It's the rare play that challenges us to dig deeper. This play does constantly."
I and You tells the story of two very different teenagers, chronically ill Caroline and basketball star Anthony, who struggle to connect as they work on a school project about Walt Whitman's poetry Leaves of Grass. As the play unfolds and through a stunning surprise ending, they find that there is more that unites them.
In addition, Academy Theatre will be hosting a Health Expo on Saturday, February 10th from 10am to 1pm. There will also be talkbacks with special guests after multiple performances. Visit Academy Theatre's website for specific dates.
Caroline will be played by Sarah T. Davis who is making her Academy debut. Efrem Whitaker will be portraying Anthony. This show is suitable for high school students and up due to content.
