Newnan Theatre Company's classic holiday show A Christmas Carol returns this year, once again directed by its playwright/composer Dale Lyles.
"There will be a twist to the story this year," Lyles says. "Auditions produced a large group of little girls-and not a large group of adults-so I decided to make use of the actors in an innovative way."
Enlarging the scope of Dickens; classic, he and the cast have devised the story of Natalie Fairgood, a present-day, rather spoiled little rich girl who is having a birthday sleepover. Jessica is the daughter of an employee of Natalie's mother who is invited to the party without Natalie's knowing. Natalie and the other girls gang up on the newcomer. When Natalie's grandfather intervenes, the girls demand a bedtime story-a ghost story.
As it happens, he has one in his pocket. He pulls it out and begins to read: "Marley was dead..."
The boundaries of the present day and Victorian England blur until the girls become part of the story...and learn their own lessons while Ebenezer Scrooge is learning his.
