k.d. Lang: Broadway Debut in AFTER MIDNIGHT Was 'A Dream Come True'

In an interview, via email, with Billboard.com, Grammy Award-winning artist k.d. lang, who made her Broadway debut in the new musical 'After Midnight', shared that the experience has been "a dream come true" and that it will have "profound" effects on her music in the future.

The singer-songwriter recently took over the lead from American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino as the second star vocalist in the new Broadway production which celebrates Duke Ellington's years at the Cotton Club nightclub in Harlem. Her one-month run ended Sunday, March 9th.

The star, who now finds herself on vocal rest after performing the grueling eight-shows per week schedule, tells the site that she had to be on the top of her game as she sang such classics as, "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Stormy Weather," "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "Zaz Zuh Zaz" along with a 17-piece band chosen by Wynton Marsalis.

"Broadway is like a huge ocean that has immense power," she writes. "It swells up and carries you along. I'm happy to rest a bit. But I'd love to drop into `After Midnight' again sometime!"

The four-time Grammy winner, best known for her cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying," her cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and her hit single, "Constant Craving," says that she treasures her time on the Broadway stage. "To sing in front of that band every night literally, was a dream come true, such a gift. The impact on me as a singer is immeasurable. It's a little early to understand how it will influence me," she adds, "But I have no doubt that this entire experience has shifted me in a profound way."

k.d. lang has been honored with four Grammy awards, eight Juno awards, a BRIT, an AMA, a VMA and four awards from GLAAD. In 2013, she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She has appeared alongside such musical luminaries as Tony Bennett, Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John and Loretta Lynn. lang has also contributed to numerous soundtracks and has appeared in films and television shows. Her two-disc Recollection, released in 2010, is a personal selection of her very best songs over her 30-year recording career.

After Midnight is directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle and features the big-band sounds of nine-time Grammy Award-winner Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars. The cast includes Dule Hill, k.d. lang, David Jennings, and Daniel J. Watts.
