artnet Auctions is proud to present Fact or Fiction?: Contemporary Asian Photography, a live auction of over 50 photographs. Featuring works by a selection of established and emerging Contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and Korean artists, the sale explores different ways in which Asian artists create a constructed narrative in their photographs. Works in the sale have estimates ranging from US$2,000 to 75,000.

The auction includes several iconic works by famed avant-garde Contemporary Chinese photographers, such as Zhang Huan (Chinese, b.1965), Zhang Dali (Chinese, b.1963), Hong Hao (Chinese, b.1965), Wang Jin (Chinese, b.1962), Sheng Qi (Chinese, b.1965), and Wang Qingsong (Chinese, b.1966). Skin (20 works) (1997) is a museum-level work comprised of 20 sequential black-and-white photographs by Huan; each image is a close-up portrait of the artist manipulating his facial expression or facial features. Estimated at US$35,000 to 45,000, this is one of four major photographs by Huan that are featured in the sale. Fact or Fiction?: Contemporary Asian Photography also includes works by mid-career and emerging artists, such as Liu Bolin (Chinese, b.1973), Xing Danwen (Chinese, b.1967), Chen Man (Chinese, b.1980), Chi Peng (Chinese, b.1981), Wang Ningde (Chinese, b.1972), Cui Xiuwen (Chinese, b.1970), Tian Taiquan (Chinese, b.1960), and Gade (Tibetan, b.1971).

Leading the selection of Japanese photography is the hauntingly beautiful triptych Kuroki Meisa Wears Gucci, #461, #462, #463 (2006) by Izima Kaoru (Japanese, b.1954). This work belongs to the artist's famed Landscape with a Corpse series and is estimated at US$55,000 to 75,000. These three stunning monumental color photographs document a staged death-scene in dramatic fashion by each offering a very different, cinematic perspective of the beautiful, perfectly coiffed, Gucci draped model. Other important photographs by Kaoru are also featured in the sale, as are images by Nobuyoshi Araki (Japanese, b.1940), Hengki Koentjoro (Indonesian, b.1963), Yasumasa Morimura (Japanese, b.1951), Daido Moriyama (Japanese, b.1938), Takashi Murakami (Japanese, b.1962), and Hiroshi Sugimoto (Japanese, b.1948). These works have estimates ranging from US$1,500 to 35,000.

The sale also includes photographs by Korean artists, led by the iconic Saturday Night (2007) by Kim In Sook (Korean, b.1969), estimated at US$9,000 to 11,000. Another highlight is Candy Series n. do.01 (c. 2011), a beautiful circular photograph by Koo Seong Youn (Korean, b.1969). This piece, estimated at US$5,500 to 7,500, depicts a close-up image of lush fruits and berries that appear verdant and organic, when in fact they are completely artificial. Photographs by notable emerging Korean artists, such as Lee Joeng Lok (Korean), JeongMee Yoon (Korean, b.1969), and Koo Bohnchang (Korean, b.1953), are also featured in the sale.

Fact or Fiction?: Contemporary Asian Photography is live on artnet Auctions from April 2 through 12, 2013, and on view here.
