Peter Sachon once again brings his ambitious solo project to the intimate setting of the Lenoard Nimoy Thalia. The concert will take place on Thursday, May 17th at 7 PM at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Peter Norton Symphony Space.
"Believing that Broadway is a vital area of new American music, Mr. Sachon's series The Cello Project opens a previously untapped source for concert music. Peter Sachon has asked acclaimed Broadway composers, who write almost exclusively for the voice, to write new music for the cello. These new pieces are composed without text, setting, or vocals. For most of these composers, this is their first attempt at this area of composition: concert music," according to press materials.
"Over twenty-five acclaimed composers have already created original pieces for The Cello Projects I and II. Among them have been Ricky Ian Gordon (My Life with Albertine, Orpheus and Euridice, Grapes of Wrath), Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell), Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on This Island, Dessa Rose), and Michael John La Chiusa (The Wild Party, Marie Christine, Hello Again). This groundbreaking series has created newfound excitement and interest from both the Broadway and classical communities. The result is a wide range of pieces from some of New York's finest composers, designed not only to show off every aspect of the cello's diverse range, but also to showcase the talents of the some of the best composers in America."
This world-premiere "cycle" will travel through the worlds of classical, jazz, and Broadway. The program will premiere works written by a starry array of composers, including Deborah Abramson, Michael Arden, Jenny Giering, Zina Goldrich, Jake Heggie, Dan Lipton, Bobby Lopez, Larry O'Keefe, Joshua Rosenblum, Stephen Schwartz, Joseph Thalken, and Maury Yeston.
Presented by the New Voices Collective, the concert will be performed in the intimate, 170-seat Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Peter Norton Symphony Space.
Tickets, priced at $25 ($18 for Symphony Space members; $20 for Seniors/Students; $15 for children), are available by phone at (212) 864-5400; online at www.symphonyspace.org; or at the box office. Symphony Space is located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street.
