This weekend at Theatrelab, Writopia will be presenting Anything and Everything, a play written by Jena Musmar and directed by Stephen Cedars.
The play follows a day in the life of three orphaned siblings of Palestinian decent: Layla, Mariam, and Adam who are faced with the grim realities of war at a young age. The play opens with a near catatonic Layla who softly washes the blood-soaked clothes of her brother Adam who is continuously abused by the military. As Adam retells the details of his latest beating, the somber mood is broken by a cheerful Mariam who does everything to keep the family together. As we move further into the story Layla and Miriam Confront each other about the ways in which they have chosen to deal with the cards life has dealt them and it's this clash that propels the story forward.
Isra Elsalihie and Zhyde Depietri's portrayal of these characters are both haunting and poignant. Elsalihie's portrayal shows in great detail the deteriorating effects of war on a child's psyche, yet there is also a strength and ferociousness throughout with which she follows her ideals and beliefs. In short, its must see performance!
Anything and Everything opens on 14th of May at 1 pm and tickets can be purchased through this link: http://www.brownpapertickets.
Writopia also runs the Worldwide Plays Festival each year, funded by David Letterman's Production Company, Worldwide Pants. This monthly festival culminates in a week of off-broadway showcases. Each play chosen for production throughout the year was written by a student and then produced, directed and performed by theatre professionals. The festival was initiated by playwright Daniel Kitrosser in 2010 and won financial support from Worldwide Pants.
