Centered in the heart of the Theatre District, NYMF will run over 21 days in 19 different venues, beginning with a star-studded Opening Night Gala on September 13th. Featuring over 65 different productions with 280 performances and almost 1000 performers and musicians, The New York Musical Theatre Festival is predicted to be the largest musical theatre event in New York City's history.
A total of 31 premiering musicals will be staged during NYMF. These productions include a series of international and American works invited to be in the Festival as well as the 15 musicals that make up "THE NEXT LINK PROJECT". Writers were invited to submit a "production ready" new musical to NYMF, and from over 220 entries, 15 works were selected by a jury that included theatre luminaries Gabriel Barre, Robyn Goodman, Kathleen Marshall and Scott Schwartz. These premiering musicals will be presented in repertory in key midtown theatre district venues.
Several exciting events will be offered during the three week run of the Festival. NYMF will be host to the concert premiere of Stephen Schwartz's CAPTAIN LOUIE as well as new works from Chicago's Kander and Ebb and, Avenue Q's Marx and Lopez. There will also be concert programs, seminars, readings and improvised musicals across the NYMF stages.
In addition to staged productions, NYMF is producing THE MOVIE MUSICAL SCREENING SERIES, presenting some of the most thrilling musical movies of the independent film scene as well as films that celebrate the history of the movie musical.
The series, showcasing award-winning new musical features, shorts, dance movies, and music videos, will screen September 27th – 30th at the Times Square AMC, a premiere 25-screen movie theatre in the heart of the theatre district.
The Festival also includes a Musicals and Television Series at NY's Museum of Television and Radio; the first Midtown Cabaret Festival (an off-shoot of the Midtown International Theatre Festival) and projects produced in partnership with ASCAP, BMI, the Duplex, MAC, the National Music Theatre Network, AMAS, the Dramatist's Guild, The American Theatre Wing, Raw Impressions, HERE, the Duplex, Ars Nova, Sh-k-boom Music, The Ensemble Studio Theatre, The A-Train Plays, Musical Mondays Theatre Lab, the TANK, the New Voices Collective and Prospect Theatre Company, among others.
