Due to high demand for tickets, the Williamstown Theatre Festival has added an additional performance of Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden on Wednesday, August 22 at 3:00. David Jones (The Caretaker) directs.
"Set in a summer resort on the Gulf of Mexico in 1949, the play follows seven friends confronting middle age, assessing the choices they have made and the lives they have led as they cling to the hope that they will one day be at peace. The Autumn Garden is searing, savagely funny proof that there is really no escape from the past. Through this piece, Hellman offers perhaps her most perceptive and personal comment on the difficulties of 'the great art of living together,'" state press notes.
The production stars Elizabeth Franz (Tony Award for Death of a Salesman) as Mrs. Mary Ellis, Mamie Gummer (The Water's Edge, film: Evening) as Sophie Tuckerman, Jessica Hecht (Julius Caesar; film: Sideways) as Nina Denery, John Benjamin Hickey (Love! Valour! Compassion!) as Nicholas Denery, Allison Janney (Hairspray film, A View from the Bridge, "The West Wing") as Constance Tuckerman and Maryann Plunkett (Sunday in the Park with George, Me and My Girl) as Rosie Griggs. The cast also includes Rufus Collins, Brian Kerwin, Cynthia Mace, Rama C. Marshall, Eric Murdoch and Brooke Parks. Set design is by Thomas Lynch. Costume design is by Ilona Somogyi. Lighting design is by David Weiner. Sound design is by John Gromada.
Tickets are available at www.wtfestival.org, 413.597.3400 and the Festival box office.
