Join USITT, costume designer William Ivey Long, and author Bobbi Owen Thursday, April 19, at The Drama Book Shop in New York City, for a signing and discussion of The Designs of William Ivey Long by Bobbi Owen, the 12th and final book in USITT's series documenting the work of America's best theatrical designers.
The monograph recounts Long's career from its earliest days and contains a chronology of his nearly 350 production credits - and six Tony Awards.
More than 100 illustrations are included, among them renderings of Long's exquisite costume designs and photographs from some of his award-winning productions. The appendices contain his numerous awards and honors and the many exhibitions where his designs and costumes have been displayed.
Author of the book, Bobbi Owen, is a USITT Fellow and the Michael R. McVaugh Distinguished Professor of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Long is the recipient of the 2018 USITT Award, which recognizes a lifetime of distinguished contribution to the performing arts.
Long most recently designed costumes for A Christmas Story, Live! for the FOX Television Network. He also designed The Prince of Broadway for director Hal Prince and the revised stage musical Young Frankenstein in London's West End for Mel Brooks, having previously designed the original 2009 Broadway production.
His recent Off-Broadway designs include The Portuguese Kid by John Patrick Shanley and Big Night by Paul Rudnick. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on Grease: Live! and designed the re-imagination of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, both for FOX.
Long is currently represented on Broadway with A Bronx Tale: The Musical and Chicago, the latter now in its 22nd year. He recently completed a four-year elected term as Chairman of the Board for The American Theatre Wing. Long has designed costumes for more than 70 Broadway productions and has been nominated for 15 Tony Awards.
