The White Horse Theater Company, known for successful productions of Shepard's True West, A Lie of The Mind and States of Shock, will present The Late Henry Moss at The Creative Place Theatre in NYC, opening January 21, 2005. Co-Artistic Director and Shepard expert Cyndy A. Marion acknowledges, "We at White Horse are repeatedly drawn to Shepard's plays for their distinct "Americanness." Not only do Shepard's plays question what it means to be "American," they also make powerful drama out of everyday American experiences. With brutally honest depictions of modern American life, Mr. Shepard's plays celebrate our individuality, reveal our weaknesses and remind us of our roots."
Cyndy A. Marion, the play's director, has been hailed by USA Today as "a budding young Shepard interpreter" and lauded by The Village Voice as "a young director making a quiet name for herself as a canny Shepard interpreter." Backstage praised her direction of A Lie of the Mind declaring, "Tensions are continuously built and broken, a testament to Marion's expert staging." Her directing credits with White Horse include: A Lie of The Mind, States of Shock and True West. Cyndy earned an MFA in directing from Brooklyn College where she directed a highly acclaimed thesis production of Fool for Love. Other New York directing credits include 12 Angry Men, Last Train to Nibroc, Mud and The Mandala.
The White Horse Theater Company is dedicated to producing plays for the public by and involving American artists. They strive to unleash, investigate and question American social and political issues by re-examining American classics and developing new American voices. Andy Propst of The American Theater Web wrote, "It's praiseworthy that Marion and The White Horse Theater continue to explore the Shepard canon. I do look forward to their next production."
Written in response to his father's death due to a drunken roadside accident in 1984, Shepard worked on The Late Henry Moss on and off for a period of ten years before completing the final version in 2000. Perhaps his most powerful and autobiographical work to date, The Late Henry Moss re-explores well-known Shepard themes; the dark side of the American family, severed relationships, spousal abuse, alcoholism, and loss of identity. The action takes place in familiar Shepard territory- a small run-down shack on the edge of the New Mexican desert. Two brothers re-unite at the deathbed of their destitute father in an effort to solve the mystery of his sudden demise. What ensues is a fierce filial battle where control of the present requires a painful visit to the past.
This production has been made possible in part through the sponsorship of The Field and with funding provided by White Horse Theater Company sponsors. For more information on the company please visit their website at www.whitehorsetheater.com.
