"When Brooklyn Shines" is keeping Brooklyn-based artists on the map with a 2-day event that showcases original theater, dance and fashion.

Actress and Playwright Setor Attipoe is the recipient of a 2009 Artist grant award from the Brooklyn Arts Council and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Originally Attipoe received the grant for her production "Love, Life & Redemption", a theatrical poetry performance. She was supposed to produce the performance in an under-served community in Brooklyn. But Attipoe is going beyond by also showcasing and celebrating other Brooklyn-based artists and presenting some of her new works at the event entitled "When Brooklyn Shines: A Celebration of Brooklyn's Artistic Excellence".

The event will bring together Brooklyn-based fashion designers, dancers and actors with the goal of providing a Crown Heights community with a quality artistic event for an affordable price.

"When Brooklyn Shines" is a weekend event that kicks off on August 1st, 2009 at Five Myles Performance Space located at 558 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, NY, 11238.

"Love, Life & Redemption" is a unique addition to stages because it intertwines 15 poems to tell the story of main character, Carolyn Bowers' life. The short vignettes combine traditional staging with pure poetic dialogue to create a memorable collection that represent the full spectrum of the human experience. This combination is what carves out a specialized niche for the production.

"Through Mizan" STAGED READING explores the cultural, social and economic dynamics that arise when African and African American cultures collide. "Through Mizan" is an international family drama that explores the relationship of a West African husband and an African American wife. The audience will be able to sit in on a one-time only staged-reading and see a soon to be produced play in a work-shop-style setting.

Based on the original production, "Love, Life & Redemption (y todo entre medio)" celebrates the triumphant return of Carmen Mendez, a former journalist and POW, by exploring her cultural, social, political and romantic experiences in an entertaining way. Mendez' story is told through an All-Latin cast of seven actors from The Dominican Republic, Spain, Puerto Rico and Peru.

All productions are available for college, regional theater and international bookings.
