Looks like America just can't get enough of the British Royal family. According the New York Post's Michael Riedel, the hot West End production of Mike Bartlett's King Charles III will be heading to Broadway this spring.
The sold out show will be joining two other previously announced imports from the other side of the Atlantic, 'The Audience,' starring Dame Helen Mirren in the role of Elizabeth II, and a stage adaptation of Hillary Mantel's bestseller, 'Wolf Hall', which follows the reign of charismatic royal Henry VIII.
KING CHARLES III, from producers Sonia Friedman and Stuart Thompson, is described as a "speculative satire about the future of the House of Windsor." The story opens with the death of Elizabeth II and follows the rise to power of her son Charles. The young King is known historically for his refusal to sign a governmental bill which would have restricted freedom of the press, causing a political stand-off which brought the country to the edge of civil war.
Helmed by Rupert Goold, the West End production stars Tim Pigott-Smith in the title role. The show transferred to the West End, after a successful off-West End run at the Almeida Theatre this past spring. Pigott-Smith is expected to make the transfer to Broadway.
The production has thus far garnered rave reviews from critics, including the UK's The Telegraph which called it "Spectacular and gripping".
As of now, a theater for the New York run has not been announced.
