The New Theater of Denmark has acquired the rights one of the greatest musical successes on Broadway and in London's West End of all time: WICKED.

WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The manuscript, which is of Winnie Holzman, is based on Gregory Maguire best-selling novel of the same name. WICKED received after its world premiere at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway in 2003 and has become Broadway's biggest popular success, breaking numerous box office records. 

Unlike these previous incarnations of the show, which have been reproductions of the Broadway original, Denmark's The New Theater is the first theatrical institution to have been authorized to produce and adapt its own version. This exceptional permission has been endorsed by Stephen Schwartzhas as history that WICKED's composer Stephen Schwartz, who spent time at the theater in Copenhagen as they developed their production of Disney's The Beauty and the Beast some time ago.

WICKED is expected to premiere at the New Theater next season.  Casting and creative team announcements are forthcoming.

Winner of 26 major awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, WICKED is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Declared "A Cultural Phenomenon" by Variety and "The Best Musical of the Decade" by Entertainment Weekly, WICKED currently has productions in New York, San Francisco, London, Tokyo, Stuttgart, Sydney and on two North American tours. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The production is directed by Joe Mantello with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. WICKED is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

On Broadwa, the musical currently stars Dee Roscioli as Elphaba, Erin Mackey as Glinda, Rondi Reed as Madame Morrible, P.J. Benjamin as The Wizard, Kevin Kern as Fiyero, Alex Brightmanas Boq, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, and Timothy Britten Parker as Dr. Dillamond.
