Innocent? Black and poor Lena Mae Baker was judged guilty in 1944 rural Georgia of killing a white man. But wasn't it rape and self-defense? Not so, said a racist judge and jury of 12 white men, and Lena became the first and only woman executed in Georgia's electric chair. Finally, we hear her side of the story.
Who Will Sing for Lena puts the contemporary issue of the legal system's racial injustice into historical perspective with a focus on Lena Baker--arrested, jailed, tried, convicted and executed all in a matter of months. The State of Georgia pardoned her in 2006, but no lesson regarding racial injustice was learned in this historic case as we still see from the legions of Black and Brown people who continue to meet injustice in the legal system every day in Georgia and across the country.
