After a sold-out presentation by The New Victory and a Drama Desk nomination in 2011, Cotton and Wrinkle are bringing the magic of White back to New York's little theatergoers. A work of modern theater for ages two to five, White is the story of a monochromatic world turned upside down when pops of color suddenly appear. The New Victory presentation of White will run at the New 42nd Street Studios from November 4-22.
The careful custodians of a colorless world full of birdsong and birdhouses, Cotton and Wrinkle work hard to hide every hint of hue. But like a bolt out of the blue, little bits of color appear and their orderly lives are thrown into a fantastic frenzy. The first show for children under five from Scotland's internationally acclaimed Catherine Wheels Theatre Company (Hansel and Gretel, New Vic 2009; Lifeboat, New Vic 2007; Martha, New Vic 2001), White was created with wit and whimsy by Andy Manley (The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk, New Vic 2014; My House, New Vic 2009) and designed with chromatic brilliance by Shona Reppe (Potato Needs a Bath, New Vic 2011; Cinderella, New Vic 2009). The production made its U.S. premiere at The New Victory and became the first show for the very young ever to receive a Drama Desk nomination.
White originally premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010, winning the Scotsman Fringe First, Herald Angel and Total Theatre Award for Physical/Visual Theatre. The following year, White won Best Children's Production at the 2011 Theatre Awards UK and three Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (Best Production for Children and Young People, Best Design and Best Technical Presentation), picking up three of the ten awards available as the most lauded production of the year. Tours throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand soon followed, including runs at the Sydney Opera House, London's Southbank Centre, Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, and the New Zealand International and Auckland Arts Festivals.
