NYC Parks invited local artists and designers to envision the surface of these ordinary barriers as canvases for art. Artists were encouraged to offer proposals that consisted of a simple bold pattern that could be painted by untrained volunteers using stencils in a single day. Additionally, artists were encouraged to account for the function of the barrier and its uneven surface, as well as the community's design preferences, which were gathered at a community brainstorming session on April 16.
The finalists' designs will be displayed at MoMa PS1 VW Dome on May 25 and 26 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m and will also be available to view online at www.nyc.gov/parks/art-and-antiquities/rockaway-beautification.
The barriers will be painted by volunteers, with assistance from NYC Parks and other agencies, later this summer. Interested volunteers are invited to email artandantiquities@parks.nyc.gov.
