The two performers play magical Oracles in the new animated musical.
Tituss Burgess has long looked up to Nathan Lane as a titan in the world of Broadway. Indeed, when he saw the Tony winner in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls, something just clicked.
However, despite this connection, the two had never worked together until Spellbound, the new animated musical from Netflix. And, even then, they recorded their parts separately, not officially meeting until very recently.
The actors voice the magical characters of Ludo and Sunny in the film. As Oracles of the Moon and Sun, the quirky (but lovable) duo guide Ellian (Rachel Zegler) on her journey to reverse a spell that has left her parents stuck as monsters.
"I'll tell you a secret," said Lane, in a recent interview with BroadwayWorld. "They're sort of a couple. They're two male Oracles who live in the woods in a mushroom house. This is sort of a common law marriage, I think," he explained.
"Isn't it interesting, though, that they would choose Queer people to be the Sun and the Moon? It's kind of beautiful,' Burgess added.
The voice cast of Spellbound also includes Jenifer Lewis, Javier Bardem, Nicole Kidman, and Olga Merediz. The animated film is directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek) with an original score from EGOT-winning composer Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The movie hits Netflix on November 22.
