"We're so ready to get out there and do this show again. It's going to be emotional for all of us, because it's been a journey! It's been a year that we've all been sitting in this and growing in this. We've been through so much together," Krystal Joy Brown told BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge. "[Opening night] will be the culmination of something we've built that's really special too all of us."
While the much anticipated revival of Merrily We Roll Along technically opens tomorrow, October 10, Brown, along with the rest of the cast and crew, celebrated the big day just last night at the Hudson Theatre.
Spanning three decades in the entertainment business, Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends — writer Mary and lyricist & playwright Charley. An inventive cult-classic ahead of its time, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most celebrated and personal songs.
"When I read the script, the writing was incredible. It's really complex storytelling and character development for a musical. We go so deep. I was like, 'Woah! [Gussie] I get,'" she continued. "When I read the script, I cried. I felt so connected to this story."
Below, watch as Kystal chats more about the complexities of her character, the honor of bringing a Sondheim musical back to Broadway, and so much more!
