New York, June 13, 2013--"200 Cartas," a bilingual romantic comedy, written and directed by Bruno Irizarry ("The Rum Diary," "Shut Up and Do It!"), which stars Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and 1993 Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, held its world premiere at United Palace of Cultural Arts in Washington Heights last night. AMC Theatres in Times Square and the Bronx will screen the film starting tomorrow, June 14.
In a previous interview with Latin American Herald Tribune, Miranda said his role, a Nuyorican comic book writer, was like written for him, "The screenplay was perfect for me." Raul (Miranda's character), who falls in love with a Puerto Rican tourist Maria Sanchez at first sight; but they are abruptly separated, was born in New York to Puerto Rican parents.
"I received many proposals that didn't work for me, but when I read the screenplay of this film, I quickly wanted to do this audition," Torres told Tribune.
In "200 Cartas," Miranda's Raul travels to Puerto Rico for the first time, and writes 200 letters trying to find the woman of his dreams.
Miranda and Torres co-star with Mexican telenovela superstar Jaime Camil and Puerto Rican entertainment icon Iris Chacón.
