The American Revolution was plotted and planned in taverns and inns all across the thirteen colonies, so it makes perfect sense that Lin-Manuel Miranda's revolutionary musical, HAMILTON, should serve as inspiration for a new craft beer.

That's where Broadway actors Mark Aldrich (RAGTIME, NEWSIES) and Jimmy Ludwig (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SPAMALOT) come in. Aside from their love of theatre, the two share a passion for good beer, wine and spirits, which they talk about on their web-based series "The Happy Hour Guys."

When the guys came up with the idea of combining their interests by matching up Broadway shows with local craft breweries to create specially-themed beers, with part of the proceeds going to local charities, there was, sadly, little immediate interest.

"We had conversations with producers where they would say, 'We just don't see what this has to do with us,'" Ludwig tells the Wall Street Journal.

But the two hit the jackpot when the hottest ticket in town, HAMILTON, signed on. The musical was matched with Gun Hill Brewing Company, a two-year-old brewery in the Williamsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx.

To help them decide what a HAMILTON-themed beer should be named and how it should taste, they conferred with experts from the cast: Alexander Hamilton alternate Javier Muñoz, co-dance captain/swing Voltaire Wade-Green, swing Neil Haskell and associate choreographer Stephanie Klemons, as seen in the videos below.

The Gun Hill team emphasized using rye, a grain much associated with the colonies at the time of the revolution, and the name Rise Up Rye soon followed.

The brew will be available at about 40 New York bars and will retail for $12-15 per bottle. A portion of proceeds from sales of the beer will go to benefit Graham Windham, a social-service organization that was born out of the orphanage founded by Elizabeth Hamilton and that continues to serve thousands of children in the New York area.
