There used to be a bit more of a line between the stars you'd see on Broadway and the stars you saw on New York's cabaret stages.
Nightclub denizens maneuvering for good tables at hot spots like Michael's Pub, The Café Carlyle and the Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room would generally go to see artists you would never, or at least be less likely to see in a musical. People like Bobby Short, Mel Torme, Blossom Dearie, Steve Ross, Barbara Carroll, Michael Feinstein and Andrea Marcovicci.
Sure, there's always been room for a Barbara Cook or a Patti LuPone, but they're more the exception than the rule.
But since its inception, Feinstein's/54 Below has welcomed a parade of popular Broadway stars who were not previously known in New York for their cabaret skills. Many of them are fairly young and perhaps unschooled in the traditions of cabaret, which has led to some fun and exciting rule-breaking.
The 92nd Street Y's Meredith Ganzman chats with four Broadway performers who have made a home at Feinstein's/54 Below and finds out why they love performing cabaret so much.
