On this day in 2013, Christopher Durang's Tony Award-winning Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike opened on Broadway.
Durang, the renowned author of comedies such as Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You and Beyond Therapy, turns Chekhov on his head with this witty farce.
Set in modern day bucolic Bucks County Pennsylvania, middle-age siblings Vanya and (adopted) Sonia idle away their lives in their quaint family country home amid regret, angst, and the distressing prophecies of an eccentric housecleaner, Cassandra.
Enter their sister Masha, a self-absorbed movie star with her prized boy toy Spike, who sparks a friendship with the beautiful girl next door Nina and the stage is set for hilarity and the imposing doom of Masha threatening to sell the family home.
