As reported by BroadwayWorld, there was a lively celebration at Sardi's last night as Broadway legend Angela Lansbury was joined by two dozen of her former cast-mates to celebrate the 50th anniversary of opening night of Jerry Herman, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee's classic Broadway smash, MAME.
Based on the 1955 novel "Auntie Mame" by Patrick Dennis and the 1956 Broadway adaptation by Lawrence and Lee, MAME was Lansbury's second Broadway musical, opening two years after the brief run of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE. Her performance as a 1920s jazz baby who suddenly becomes guardian of her young nephew won Lansbury the first of her five Tony Awards.
Sadly, Frankie Michaels, who won a Tony Award for his performance as Young Patrick, passed on earlier this year. But a special remembrance was delivered by Rosh Lowe, who, as Roshi Handwerger, appeared with Lansbury as Young Patrick in the 1983 revival.
It was the Broadway debut for Lowe, who won the role in an open call. He followed up with a stint in the 1984 Broadway revival of OLIVER! starring Patti LuPone and Ron Moody.
Lowe's career eventually turned to journalism, and he's now a television news reporter for WSVN in Miami.
