While Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's musical ASSASSINS contains many discomforting moments involving the murders of United States Presidents like Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, there's a special chill in the air when two would-be presidential assassins who are both still alive, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme and John Hinckley, Jr. sing the delusional romantic ballad, "Unworthy Of Your Love."
A devotee of Charles Manson, Fromme spent 34 years in prison before being released on parole in 2009 for her attempt to gun down President Gerald Ford in 1975.
Now, as reported by Reuters, Hinckley will soon be released from the psychiatric hospital where he has been staying since 1982.
In 1981, Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan, who survived the assassination attempt. He also shot a police officer, a Secret Service agent and presidential press secretary James Brady, who was left paralyzed and spent the rest of his life using a wheelchair. Brady became an advocate for gun control and The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, better known as The Brady Bill was named in his honor.
The nation was shocked when Hinckley declared that he tried to kill the president in order to impress actress Jodie Foster. The two have never met.
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman said Hinckley, who is now 61 and who was found not guilty by reason of insanity, no longer posed a danger to himself or others.
