As reported by BroadwayWorld, in October of 2015, the website Genius, recognized as "the world's biggest collection of song lyrics and crowdsourced musical knowledge," was well into their project of fully annotating the entire score of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway smash Hamilton, inviting readers to help point out the multitude of musical and historic references heard on the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Genius spokesperson Nat Guevara says, "the musical remains hugely popular on the site; sometimes even outperforming songs by Drake and Beyoncé, traffic-wise." Miranda himself keeps a page of his notes on Genius (click here).
While Broadway fans may easily catch references to 1776 and THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, these more contemporary musical moments may fly by those without an intimate knowledge of hip-hop and rap.
To help theatre types get their education, and to point out to the hip-hop community how "the hit Broadway musical deliberately nods to Biggie, DMX, Jay Z, and other hip-hop heavyweights,' Genius has released this fascinating video "9 Classic Rap References In Hamilton."
Good news - Hamilton's digital lottery is officially back for the winter, meaning that fans can enter online daily for a chance to see one of Broadway's biggest hits. Better news - this means that digital #Ham4Ham is back, featuring surprise performances from the cast. Enter in the digital lottery at www.hamiltonbroadway.com/lottery.
