Actor and activist George Takei has a bit of a history with presidential candidate Donald Trump. In 2012 he was 'fired' from Trump's reality show "Celebrity Apprentice," but Takei was more concerned when, while the actor was giving his Broadway debut performance in the musical ALLEGIANCE, Trump suggested that there was justification for the United States to imprison its citizens of Japanese descent in internment camps during World War II.
ALLEGIANCE was inspired by Takei's childhood experiences being imprisoned with his family in such a camp, and he publicly invited Donald Trump to attend the show, reserving a seat for him at every performance. (The offer was not accepted.)
Determined to help stop the Republican candidate from becoming the next United States president, Takei has recorded a video message in Spanish, warning against the consequences of a Trump presidency.
George Takei returns to the New York stage this spring, playing Reciter in Classic Stage Company's revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's PACIFIC OVERTURES, to be directed by Tony Award winner (and 2016 Tony Award nominee) John Doyle, who this season takes the reins as Artistic Director of the vital East Village theater company.
Performances for PACIFIC OVERTURES begin April 5, 2017. Additional casting and creative team to be announced at a later date. Visit classicstage.org.
