Some of the cleverest and most inventive musical theatre to be seen last season was not on a Broadway, or even an Off-Broadway stage, but presented by The CW Television Network. Rachel Bloom's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," a fresh new comedy series full romantic foibles and neurotic misconceptions, plays out its story-lines with well-crafted theatre songs that forward the plot and develop the characters.
Bloom was a guest star last night on The CW's improv comedy show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", and in this hilarious musical sequence with regulars Wayne Brady and Jeff Davis, she shows she can be just as funny off the cuff as she is scripted.
"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" will be entering its second season on The CW Network later this year. Rachel Bloom is Rebecca Bunch, a successful driven, and possibly crazy young woman who impulsively gives up everything in a desperate attempt to find love and happiness...in suburban West Covina, CA.
The cast includes Tony nominee and recent film voice-over star Fontana (Frozen) who plays Greg, a bartender and Rebecca's (Bloom) first friend; actor and comedIan McDonald (MADtv) is Darryl, Rebecca's new boss; OBIE and Drama Desk Award winner Donna Lynn Champlin (Broadway productions of Billy Elliot, SWEENEY TODD) plays Paula, her co-worker at the law firm who is suspicious of Rebecca; and Broadway star Rodriguez III (HERE LIES LOVE) plays Josh, Rebecca's childhood boyfriend who she serendipitously runs into years later, and who acts as the catalyst for her dramatic life change.
