In an all-new interview with USA TODAY award-winning director Bartlett Sher discusses the hit Broadway revival of The King and I, currently up for 9 Tony Awards.

"Whenever you do a new interpretation of a great, previous text of any kind, you always look for some kind of immediate significance right now," explains the director of the new production. "Whatever applies to or affects our world or us as human beings right now, in the minute, in the world in 2015." Watch the interview in full below!

THE KING AND I

Lincoln Center Theater's The King and I, which features a cast led by Kelli O'Hara (as Anna Leonowens) and Ken Watanabe (as the King of Siam), is directed by Bartlett Sher, officially opened on April 16 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street).

Ruthie Ann Miles (as Lady Thiang), Ashley Park (as Tuptim), Conrad Ricamora (as Lun Tha),Edward Baker-Duly (as Sir Edward Ramsey),Jon Viktor Corpuz (as Prince Chulalongkorn), Murphy Guyer (as Captain Orton), Jake Lucas(as Louis), Paul Nakauchi (as Kralahome), and Marc Oka (as Phra Alack) co-star.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's finest works, The King and I boasts a score which features such beloved classics as Getting To Know You, Hello Young Lovers, Shall We Dance, I Have Dreamed, and Something Wonderful. Set in 1860's Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher, whom the imperious King brings to Siam to tutor his many wives and children.
