Though N.C. Hunter may have been one of the more popular English playwrights during the 1950s, with his dramas featuring such distinguished cast members as John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike, Ingrid Bergman, Ralph Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave and Michael Redgrave, he only had a brief fling on Broadway in 1955 with his Chekhovian drama A DAY BY THE SEA.
True to form, the production starred American theatre royalty, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Also true to form, the Mint Theatre Company, specialists in digging up worthy but forgotten plays from the past, are presenting the drama's first New York production since.
Austin Pendleton directs the story of a middle-aged man recalling his disappointments in life and reaching for an opportunity to start fresh.
The cast includes Julian Elfer, Katie Firth, Philip Goodwin, Sean Gormley, Polly McKie, Kylie McVey, George Morfogen, Mark Anderson Phillips, Athan Sporek and Jill Tanner. The Mint offers a video peek at their first rehearsal.
A DAY BY THE SEA will be the Mint's first production as a resident theater company at Theatre Row. Performances will begin July 22nd and continue through September 24th at their new home at the Beckett Theater at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street between 9th and Dyer Avenues). Opening Night is set for August 25th.
