Every once in a while a show comes out that will transform the face of theater, both in New York and around the world. This is not that show. It is a loose collection of scenes and songs from some of today's most local writers. Brand new short plays, dances and animal acts* will go up in this first-ever production, modeled after the vaudeville variety show.
The night features new works by Daniel F. Levin (Spandex the Musical), Eliza Mason (The Silent History, advance reporter), Natalie Bird (Dominatrix Breakroom), Hope DeBates (Hope DeBates and North Forty), Liz Piccoli (True Love, the Pink Musical), and Daniel Gallant (Executive Director of Nuyorican and 2016 Eisenhower Fellow). This should not, however, deter you from coming. It is produced by Mr. Levin and Ms. Mason. Tickets are $15 at nuyorican.org or at the door. Proceeds to benefit the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
Variety Show on a Thursday will feature the talents of Tara Bahna James, Laura Dadap, Kate Emswiler, Rod Alonzo, Amanda Miller, Philip Cruise, Cat Cruise, Ed Miller, Ilsa Dooner, James Navan, Katherine McLaughlin, and Valdaniels Martib, in addition to the authors. Avi Soroka will Stage Manage.
Audience members should be prepared to be taken into the shocking world of school recess, technology-driven romance, a decision-making couple, a never-before-translated Medieval Epic, and more, as well as experience the musical stylings of Lev Daniels, Cherie Chanteuse, Mr. Navan and Mr. Martib.
Tickets can be purchased at http://www.nuyorican.org/event/1078341.
