Michael Riedel of the New York Post reports Usher, who made his Broadway debut last season as Billy Flynn in Chicago may be headed back to The Rialto as the Golden Boy.

Reportedly: "Plans are afoot for a Broadway revival of the 1964 musical – based on Clifford Odets' classic play – about a pianist who gives up his music career to become a championship boxer.  Usher is in negotiations to play the role, which was originated by Sammy Davis Jr."

Composer Charles Strouse praised Usher's performance skills, and while contracts haven't been confirmed, Strouse assures Usher's interest in the role is real.

Multi-award-winning R&B recording artist, Usher's turn as the slick-talking lawyer in Chicago brought booming business to the Ambassador last year – though his limited engagement was cut short due to illness.

Golden Boy premiered on Broadway September 23, 1964; opening October 20, 1964 and played a total 568 performances at the Majestic Theatre.

The original musical, directed by Arthur Penn, was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Choreography by Donald McKayle, Best Producer (Hillard Elkins) and Sammy Davis, Jr.'s nomination as Best Actor in a Musical.

Golden Boy features music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams. The musical's book was written by Clifford Odets and William Gibson.
