Urban Stages To honor African American Cultural Leaders, 3/11

New York's Urban Stages will honor leaders of the Harlem Community for their dedication to the arts, this Thursday, March 11.2010.

Those being honored include: Sandi Jackson (Eastern Area Chair, The LINKS/President, National Women in the Arts) , Lucille McEwen (Executive Director, Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement), Denise Branker (Arts Chair for New York Coalition of 100 Black Women), Robin Williams (President of North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc/ Vice-President of Membership of the Mid Hudson Valley Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.), Randreta Ward (Director of Development Harlem Hospital), Nadine Johnson (Metropolitan Black Bar Association), Kimberly Singleton (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority), Daniella Johnson (NY Urban League Young Professionals), Rev. Anita Burson (The Baptist Ministers' Conference of Greater New York & Vicinity/ Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Service & Celebration), Bonita Savage (Cultural Event Coordinator, 1199SEIU Bread and Roses Cultural Project) and Gerri Warren Merrick (Manhattan Chapter of The LINKS, Inc.), Linda Flanagan (Director of the Extended Day / Program at Harlem Day Charter School), Karen Calder (African Dance Teacher at the Harlem Day Charter Schools).

Beginning April 9th, Urban Stages will present the musical Langston in Harlem by Written by Langston Hughes, Walter Marks and Kent Gash. Langston in Harlem is an exciting new musical about one of America's most honored poets, Langston Hughes. Set in the African-American cultural capital of Harlem from the Harlem Renaissance through the Civil Rights movement, Langston in Harlem tells the story of Langston Hughes' journey into manhood and his emergence as one of the most beloved and forward thinking artists of our time. This groundbreaking new musical is filled with Jazz, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Swing, dance and spoken-word that sings, jumps, stomps and shouts. Langston Hughes' glorious words and poetry of love, loss, joy and the blues and the people of Harlem who inspired him, come gloriously to life, in Langston in Harlem and are once again universal and unforgettable!
