Upcoming BETWEEN THE KEYS With Jed Distler to Honor Pianist Radu Lupu

Radu Lupu's death this past April hit the piano community hard. He was a pianist who consistently channeled his virtuosity towards musical ends, and was universally celebrated for his poetic imagination and warm, full-bodied sonority.

Pianist, radio host and educator Donna Weng Friedman shares her memories of Lupu with The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler on this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, which also will feature rare live performances of Lupu in works that he otherwise did not record by Gershwin, Chopin, Mozart and Debussy.

Distler has this to add:

"A few months ago I met up with my friend and colleague Donna Weng Friedman, who is one of today's most distinctive pianists, educators and broadcasters. We hadn't seen each other in person since March of 2020 (so what else is new?), and it was only then that I learned that the late Radu Lupu was a mentor of hers.

Since I had already planned an episode around live Radu Lupu performances of works that he did not otherwise record, it made sense to invite Donna to my studio to share her memories of working with Radu Lupu and her insights into his artistry and personality.

And, as it happens, November 30th would have been Radu Lupu's 77th birthday. So this episode turns out to be fitting memorial, as well as an opportunity to hear this great pianist play composer like Gershwin, Debussy and Chopin."
