The award-winning Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC) conducted by Artistic Director/Founder Francisco J. Núñez will be the special guest of the venerable, all-male University Glee Club of New York City at Alice Tully Hall Saturday, January 17, at 8 p.m.
Mr. Núñez, the UGC's fifth conductor since the chorus was founded in 1894, will lead both choirs in a program of classical and contemporary music, with highlights that include Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, and arrangements of songs of the sea. The concert marks a double anniversary: the 120th anniversary year of UGC and the 20th anniversary of the first collaboration between UGC and YPC at the very site of their initial association - Alice Tully Hall.
All tickets are $50 and are available at the Alice Tully Hall box office, by calling CenterCharge 212-721-6500, or online at www.lincolncenter.org.
Founded in 1988, the Young People's Chorus of New York City collaborates with many of the top artists and cultural institutions of our time and has frequently sung with UGC since their first concert together at Alice Tully Hall in 1995. With a repertoire that spans from renaissance and classical traditions to folk, pop, jazz, and contemporary music, YPC's virtuosity and vibrant showmanship have thrilled audiences on four continents. Each year more than 1,400 children ages 7 to 18 participate in YPC's after-school and in-school programs. In 2011 YPC was recognized with a National Medal of Arts and Humanities from the President's Committee on the Arts & Humanities.
The University Glee Club of New York City was founded to encourage male vocal singing of the highest excellence. Its 150 active membership ranges from recent college graduates to men who have sung with UGC for over 50 years. Since its founding, UGC's roster has included thousands of men from hundreds of universities and colleges, all possessing the desire to sing, a practice learned or fostered during their undergraduate years. This is the first of two major concerts UGC performs each season, and its repertoire covers a wide range of music including classical to gospel, folk, jazz, and world music.
