BWW reported yesterday that that NY health officials had contacted Yorkville Endoscopy, the outpatient clinic where late comedian Joan Rivers' procedure to repair her vocal cords resulted in respiratory and cardiac arrest. The department emphasized that they were only "reviewing the matter" but had not begun an official investigation.
Today, the New York Post is reporting that The New York City Medical Examiner's Office is now investigating the cause of Rivers' death along with state heath officials. Law-enforcement sources tell the paper that the agencies are "taking a look at what complications may have caused the 81-year-old comedy legend to stop breathing" at the Upper East Side endoscopy clinic last week.
In further news, TMZ reports that Rivers' autopsy has been concluded but the Medical Examiner will require additional information including conducting toxicology testing, and interviewing medical professionals in order to find a clear "cause and manner of death."
Rivers passed away yesterday at the age of 81. She had been placed in a medically induced coma and was moved from the intensive-care unit at Mount Sinai Hospital on Wednesday. Her daughter Melissa shared the sad news of her mother's passing in a statement issued Thursday afternoon which read: "It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother."Funeral services for the late comedian will be held this Sunday, September 7th at Manhattan's Temple Emanu-El. No details have been released as to whether the service will be open to the public.
