Uncle Philip's Coat, A Play for One Actor, has been described as an Historic Document, A Coat and a Performance. A funny and poignant piece written by Matty Selman, based on a story by Selman and Larry Block, Uncle Philip's Coat can be experienced at Theatre Row, The Studio Theatre, 410 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036, as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival on Saturday, October 10, 2015, at 9:00 pm.
There's so much more to this coat than meets the eye. As the play unfolds, we discover the unusual history of the coat that literally saved Philip's life while its story becomes a metaphor for man's road to self-realization. Though it starts out as a seemingly worthless garment, through the family stories it holds in its threads, it reflects the journey not only of Uncle Philip, but a journey of the human spirit. The coat that everyone first wanted to destroy becomes a precious artifact...the coat of dreamers.
Uncle Philip's Coat was developed at the HB Studio Theatre and was selected as a Herbert Berghof Memorial Play. It was then produced Off-Broadway to critical raves at the American Jewish Theater. Subsequently, Uncle Philip's Coat was presented at venues around the United States, including the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC, Theatre J in Washington, DC, and the Jewish Theatre of New England. A film version of the play was selected for the Manhattan Film Festival and won the 2014 CINE Golden Eagle for Independent Fiction.
Now, with celebrated writer/actor Matty Selman performing in his own solo piece, Uncle Philip's Coat can once again be seen in New York prior to playing additional regional performances.
