The hit rock musical UBU SINGS UBU returns for two late-night performances in January! Called "LOUD, INSPIRED, AND MORE THAN A LITTLE DERANGED" by the New York Times, and "SPLENDID, ENRAGED, HILARIOUS AND f-ing WELL PLAYED" by Time Out NY, UBU SINGS UBU plays two late night shows at the legendary downtown burlesque club, the Slipper Room, 167 Orchard St, NYC Sunday January 11th & Monday January 12th at 11PM. Tickets are priced at $18 advance sale, $22 at the door, and available at The Slipper Room box office and online at http://www.slipperroom.com/search/?q=ubu

Adapted from a version of the original French text of Alfred Jarry's scandalous play Ubu Roi, and run through the Google Translate engine, UBU SINGS UBU is fueled by the giddy, angular new wave rock of Pere Ubu, the cult band whose name and style were inspired by the play. Tony Torn, who co-directs with Dan Safer of Witness Relocation, plays Pere Ubu, while Julie Atlas Muz is Mere Ubu, in a bizarre parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth, set in Poland instead of Scotland.

The premiere at Abrons Arts Center in April 2014 was known for its riotous atmosphere-audience members rushed the stage during curtain call to mosh with the ensemble while liberal consumption of absinthe-laced cocktails contributed to the merry mayhem. UBU SINGS UBU returns for two late night shows, effectively party-crashing January's multiple theater festivals in collision with the APAP performing arts conference. "Now that Under the Radar and other downtown festivals have discontinued their late night lounges," says Torn, "where will the hordes of late-night theatre professionals go after the 8pm shows have ended? If they have the guts to party with Pa and Ma Ubu, we'll be ready to bathe them in sweat, absinthe and kielbasa juice!"

The Slipper Room, with its jewel-box proscenium stage and decadent atmosphere, is a perfect setting for UBU SINGS UBU's transgressive rock and roll theatre. Burlesque legend Julie Atlas Muz is a veteran featured performer and The Slipper Room's major domo James Habecker, has been a long-time aficionado of the notorious Ubu Roi author Alfred Jarry. "Jarry is one of the most significant and influential of modern artists, if not the most influential," says Habecker. "When others were talking the talk Jarry was walking the walk. It is artists like him that the New York scene needs most. I am honored that his work is being kept alive at the Slipper Room. "

UBU SINGS UBU, features Tony Torn (Jay Scheib's The Disinherited, Truman Capote's Breakfast At Tiffany's on Broadway), Julie Atlas Muz (Whitney Biennial artist and Miss Exotic World!), and features Ubu Sings Ubu Band, a live Pere Ubu cover band, with Mark Ettinger (Flying Karamazov Brothers) on keys/theremin/oscillator, Matt Butterfield (600 Highwaymen's THE RECORD) on guitar, Emmitt Joe George (the Strap-Ons) on bass and Patrick "Paddymyke" Conlon (Agents of Karma, G.C.B.E, Work of Art and The Natural Mystics) on drums.

UBU SINGS UBU is adapted and co-directed by Tony Torn (Door Wide Open, Reverend Billy and The Church Of Stop Shopping); co-directed and choreographed by Dan Safer (Witness Relocation); produced by Presence Productions; video by Kaz Phillips Safer, sets and costumes by Deb O, and lights by Jay Ryan. Musical Director is Vera Beren, with live sound mixing by Freddie Katz.
