Don ZanFagna [1929-2013] may be the most famous visionary artist you never heard of. During his lifetime he had more than 215 solo and group, national and international exhibitions. ZanFagna's utopian spirit and environmental consciousness were the driving forces behind the 49 extraordinary collages from three highly developed series of work that comprise this unique exhibition, The Manhattan Project, The Cyborg Series, and The Pulse Domes. Experience a dynamic fusion of Surrealism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Psychedelic Pop by an idiosyncratic genius, visionary architect, utopian artist, and restless provocateur of the 1970s.
The twenty collages in A Series of Interruptions (Sophie Aston) are composed of images clipped from copies of vintage Better Homes and Gardens from the 1950s through the early 1960s. By carefully disrupting the magazine's occupied domestic interiors with her own flat painted surfaces Aston directly addresses the tension between abstraction and representation. In transforming these interiors she engages the viewer but quickly thwarts their search for a legible space that makes sense. By doing so she draws our attention toward the discomfort we feel when left adrift in uncertainty. At the same time that she engages the viewer in her paradoxical picture space she says that she is presenting an odd emptiness and an odd inaccessibility because it asks what painting is supposed to be doing now.
