Doug Catiller of True Image Studio volunteered as the photographer for Get On The Bus, a program that allows children and their caregivers to visit their mother or father at a well-known prison in California on Father's Day. The bus picks up families from places like San Diego and San Bernardino, northward through LA and Orange Counties all waiting to see their loved ones in prison. Some of these families were seeing their fathers or grandfathers for the first time, while others were on a repeat visit. Inmates have to be on extra good behavior to qualify for this program. Doug learned from speaking to other volunteers, that many of these men don't want to lose the privilege, so they have excellent behavior and cooperation.

Doug's primary function as a photographer during the trip was to photograph the families and inmates that members of the press could not get. This is because Doug received special privileges from the families that are given the choice of whether they can be photographed for news or other publication. After arriving to the prison, Doug explains the experience, "The joy in the room was incredible. For the next four to five hours, I photographed the families as they reconnected, played games, ate, had their faces painted and enjoyed valuable time together."

At first, the inmates were put-off by the cameras but once the inmates were able to meet with Doug and understand why he was there, they welcomed him. "Experiencing the visiting time was a real rush for me. I enjoyed meeting and interacting with the families as I made my rounds through the visiting room. I was doing what I enjoy most; I was photographing families," said Doug. After photographing the visitors room, Doug was able to photograph a death row inmate meet his grandchildren for the first time.

"Once inside the cell, any fear I might have had was either on the back burner or gone completely. My focus was on being a family portrait photographer. I captured a variety of shots; some with family members posing for the camera and many candid moments while they were focused on each other," explained Doug.

The photograph attached captures the emotional aspect of the inmates with their families and the impact of the volunteer program. Doug said that "Working with Get on the Bus this past year has been an incredible experience that I wish to repeat every year. I hope that I have been able to give as much as I have gotten from volunteering."
