BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the longest operating performance venue in lower Manhattan, in partnership with the New Federal Theatre, proudly presents the inaugural Hatitudes: A Tribute to the Grace and Style of Our Mothers on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, 2018 with a reception at 2:00PM, followed by a performance at 3pm.
New Federal Theatre's Audience Development Committee noticed that many friends of the theatre were caregivers of their mothers, or had lost their mothers due to long illness or quick suddenly with no preparation. These conversations were profound and moving and lead to this event: a tribute to mothers. Additionally, putting on one's 'Sunday Best' is a tradition in African-American culture most often learned from mothers. The tradition of going to church on Sunday dressed in one's best and most beautiful outfit; capped off with gloves and a hat, is a memory to celebrate!
This event will specifically honor Marie Brown, Marjorie Johnson & LaZette McCants. Marie Brown's contribution to African-Americans in the publishing world is unmatched. Marjorie Johnson is an award-winning and critically acclaimed actress who is always serving others in need: members of the church, visiting those in nursing homes, and caring for sick friends and family. LaZette McCants is one of the founders of the AUDELCO Awards, Torch Bearers, and Volunteer Divas.
The program and awards presentation will be tributes and poems written by Gina Bardwell, Lynnette Freeman, Yvette Heyliger, Christine Toy Johnson, Leslie Lewis, Dominique Morisseau, SM Shephard-Massat, Arminda Thomas, Nikkole Salter, and Bridgette Wimberly. The afternoon will include readings, song, and dance, all celebrating our mothers.
