It is 7:04pm on a Thursday. To the average audience member of THE COLOR PURPLE, the most important person waiting backstage is one of the above-the-title stars (Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Holliday or Danielle Brooks). But those in the industry know that, at this particular moment, the most important person is a woman sitting stage right in front of three monitors. That woman, with a headset on and binder in front of her, is Stage Manager Sharika Niles. She is the one who will soon give the word to start the show. She is the one who tonight is in charge of 'calling the show.' She is the one who will dictate the show the audience sees by giving the word for a spotlight, sound effect, set movement, etc.. If nothing else, the continued scandals surrounding Donald Trump have given Alec Baldwin a deep well of material from which to draw for his SNL impression of the Republican Presidential Nominee. Last night, Baldwin's Trump and Kate McKinnon's Hillary Clinton went head-to-head in a cold open of the second presidential debate, which was so bad in real life that the SNL counterparts of Martha Raddatz (Cecily Strong) and Anderson Cooper (Alex Moffat) took a shot before beginning. On October 14, 2016 at 8:00PM, The New York Pops, led by Music Director Steven Reineke, launched its 34th season at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, celebrating the legacy and timeless works of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. In celebration of the 60th Anniversary of their landmark production of My Fair Lady, The New York Pops will highlight the songwriting team's iconic collaborations from the Golden Age of Broadway, including selections from Camelot, Brigadoon, Gigi, and Paint Your Wagon. Guest artists Colin Donnell and Laura Osnes of Broadway fame alongside operatic baritone Nathan Gunn will bring these legendary show tunes to life with the full 78-piece New York Pops. While promoting her new Netflix series, Haters Back Off, Colleen Ballinger stopped by Jimmy Fallon this weekend to transform into her famous character, Miranda Sings, and give Jimmy Miranda's hosting tips, since, according to Miranda, he's not 'a very good host.' Miranda was even kind enough to walk Fallon through a simulation of how he should talk to guests, as well as how he should introduce movie and TV show clips.  (more...)
