This week, Michael Riedel of the New York Post reported on the brand-new Donna Summer musical currently being in workshopped in New York City.
The musical, Working Title "The Donna Summer Project", takes the shape of a biography with three actresses playing Summer at key moments in her life, taking the audience on a journey through her childhood, her rise to super stardom during the disco era, and as a fading pop diva reckoning with life after the spotlight.
It is reported that Hamilton alumni, Ariana DeBose, turned in great work at a recent workshop playing the diva at the height of her fame. The show will also use some-gender swapping to tell the singer's life story as female actors take up the roles of some of the key men in the singer's life.
All of Summer's timeless disco hits, including "On the Radio", "Bad Girls", and "Heaven Knows" will be included in the score.
The show is helmed by famed Broadway director, Des McAnuff and is being heralded by industry insiders as "masterly...swift, energetic, sharp - Des at his best."
Producing are legendary record executive, Tommy Mottola, along with the Dodgers.
