The New York Times has reported that Anna Manahan, an actress renowned in Ireland who earned belated acclaim in the United States for her Tony-winning portrayal of monstrous mother in Martin McDonagh's play "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," died Sunday in Waterford, Ireland.

Irish Arts Minister Martin Cullen, who knew the actress personally, said in a statement to the Irish Times that, "When people talk about great influential Irish actresses they talk of Anna Manahan.
"That is a testament to her talent. The way she shared her talent and creative spirit with others was one of her greatest gifts to all of us during the course of her life."
Her career including leading parts in the work of Sean O'Casey, John B Keane, JM Synge, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Christy Brown and Brian Friel.
In her later years she was an advocate for the elderly in Ireland.
