Tonner Doll Company plans to release their very first Broadway collection: The Memphis Collection. Inspired by the 2010 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Memphis, this collection will feature the fashions straight from the stage.
“Jack (Tonner’s VP) and I went to see Memphis in February, and we were absolutely enchanted by the performance, the costumes, the dance and the music. We knew right away that this show would be a terrific venue for us,” said Robert Tonner, celebrated doll artist and company CEO.
“We are thrilled that Huey and Felicia will have a permanent home among the Tonner Doll collection,” Memphis producer Sue Frost said. “Memphis prides itself on seizing opportunities to break new ground in innovative ways and we are so pleased that the show will have its own tangible legacy in the form of these beautiful dolls.”
The Felicia figure will arrive on Tonner’s 16” Tyler Wentworth™ body style in the spice skin tone, and features a brand new head sculpt with rooted dark brown Saran hair, and painTed Brown eyes. She will come wearing her beguiling pale gold chiffon dress complete with delicate silver and gold metallic embroidered detailing, gold shoes and jewelry.
Huey will arrive on Tonner’s 17” Matt O’Neill body style in the Tyler skin tone, and is also a brand new head sculpt with molded hair and painted blue eyes. Huey’s authentic costume includes the polka-dotted jacket lined in black and white leopard print, black and white checked pants, and hip polka-dotted and striped shirt. His ensemble is topped off with his signature charcoal gray hat.
With hand-painted facial details, multiple points of articulation for dynamic posing, and Tonner’s noted quality craftsmanship, The Memphis Collection will be a must-have for any Broadway lover and collector.
Memphis features a brand new, Tony winning score with music by Bon Jovi’s founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Tony-winner Joe DiPietro, who also pens the musical’s book. Directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.
One of the top 100 longest running Broadway shows of all time, Memphis will play its final performance on Broadway this Sunday, August 5th after 30 previews and 1,166 regular performances at the historic Shubert Theatre. In celebration, the Memphis dolls will be launched and available for pre-order as of August 2nd for $174.99 each. Memphis is currently playing to packed houses across the country as the U.S. national tour begins its second year.
