Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions (Jake Lipman, producing artistic director) will revive Theresa Rebeck's Mauritius starting October 18 at The Bridge Theatre 244 West 54 Street, 12th Floor (part of Shetler Studios) in NYC.
Mauritius is a darkly funny play about two estranged half-sisters who come across a relative's book of rare stamps. The humor And the tension rise when one sister's attempt to sell the stamps creates a feverish bidding war among collectors - unbeknownst to the other sister.
TIC's revival stars Emily Nash as the headstrong Jackie, Jake Lipman as her sentimental older sister, Mary; Kurt Bardele as a stamp expert; Michael Vincent Carrera as a seedy buyer; and Derek Long as Dennis, the determined broker of the deal. Mauritius is directed by Jake Lipman, lighting design by Angeline Nortz, and sound design by Philip Rothman.
Theresa Rebeck's play premiered on Broadway in 2006, and other works by the playwright include Dead Accounts and Seminar on Broadway, The Scene, The Water's Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann, and Spike Heels, among others. Her TV credits include Dream On, Brooklyn Bridge, L.A. Law, Third Watch, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent as well as creating the backstage musical drama Smash for NBC.
Founded in 2006 by Jake Lipman, Tongue in Cheek Theater's mission is to produce thought-provoking comedic works. Mauritius marks TIC's 35th production in NYC. Recent productions include TIC's company-created comedy Buffalo Heights by Adam Harrell (2017 Planet Connections Theatre Fest nominee for 3 best actor awards and outstanding overall production, 2014 Puffin Foundation grant winner), the NYC premiere of Women Playing Hamlet in 2016, and the world premiere adaptation of The Inn at Lake Devine (based on the best-selling novel by Elinor Lipman) in 2015.
