Fridays on Ice, the Ice Factory Festival's late-night salon series is thrilled to announce this year's lineup. Curated and produced by Kevin Laibson (formerly of The PIT and Magic Futurebox), with associate producer Jonathan Portee (The Late Stream), Fridays on Ice features cutting-edge micro-works by experimental comedians, rappers, storytellers, dancers, and cabaret performers. These artists are creating work not usually seen in downtown theatre spaces, but more typically found performing in nightclubs, bars, and private apartments. Fridays on Ice is an ephemeral mini-fest 1 hour a week through Ice Factory - it takes over the 6x20 foot strip in front of the stage (complete with that week's Ice Factory Mainstage set as a backdrop), pulls the bar inside, and brings audiences up close and personal to some of New York's cagiest experimentalists.
Performances are Friday night 7/13 through 8/10 at 10pm. Tickets for Fridays on Ice are $10 and include your first drink. Purchase at NewOhioTheatre.org or by calling 212-352-3101. For info visit NewOhioTheatre.org/FridaysOnIce18.htm
This Week's Artist and Lineup Information: Kaitlin Kaufman (Big Apple Circus) and Maarit Hara (the idiots, poHa- Post Harold Movement at UCB) present Am I the Only One?, a highly physical snapshot of a woman and her life-sized doll. We know this feeling. It stares up at us from the black screens of our smartphones. Am I the Only One? is an absurdist ode to the loneliness we feel when we recognize we have an intimate relationship with the inanimate.
Jonathan Braylock is a comedian and actor you've definitely seen around. He's a co-host of the Black Men Can't Jump [in Hollywood] podcast, and a regular at UCB. He's created and performed in digital media all over the internet with footprints on Seriously.tv, MTV, Comedy Central's Snapchat channels, IFC and more. He's made the rounds on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Broad City, The Jim Gaffigan Show, and so on. Braylock's talent for blending broad comedy and incisive satire allows for work that gracefully balances side-eye with a strong moral leaning towards kindness.
Closing out the night is AzN PoP!, NYC's favorite satirical K-Pop band. Come see the act that made such a huge noise in the comedy scene that even PBS News Hour has an opinion: "The five members of AzN PoP! each represent a different Asian country: Japan, India, the Philippines, South Korea and China. Through song and satire, their material skewers the Asian-American experience and takes sharp digs at stereotypes and whitewashing - though disarmingly."
AzN PoP! is: Iliana Inocencio (MTV's Girl Code, Bustle), Angel Yau (The Artist Inside Me, UCB, Soojung Dreams of Fiji, Joe Mande's Award-Winning Comedy Special), Ann Marie Yoo (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, MTV's Hey Girl), Maya Deshmukh (UCB, Funny or Die) and Anna Suzuki (Netflix's She's Gotta Have It, High Maintenance)
New Ohio Theatre is a two-time OBIE Award-winning theatre under the leadership of Robert Lyons, Artistic Director, and Marc Stuart Weitz, Producing Director. The New Ohio serves New York's most adventurous theatre audiences by developing and presenting bold work from today's vast independent theatre community. They believe the best of this community, the small artist-driven ensembles and the daring producing companies who operate without a permanent theatrical home, are actively expanding the boundaries of where American theatre is right now and where it's going. From their home in the West Village's historic Archive Building, the New Ohio provides a high-profile platform for downtown's most mature, ridiculous, engaged, irreverent, gut-wrenching, frivolous, sophisticated, foolish and profound theatrical endeavors.
